Galaxies that look like jellyfish? Soil bacteria as medical assistants? One year of living and doing research in the Arctic Sea? - In 2022, the inland freighter MS Wissenschaft once again tours all across Germany. On board, an interactive exhibition takes a closer look at how science works and how scientists approach their research questions.
Curious minds will be satisfied: Aboard the ship they learn how researchers study the universe, how they investigate social cohesion, and how data on the deep sea or on mosquito species is collected. What methods to scientists use? What challenges do they encounter in their work? An what motivates them in their research?
As part of the exhibition, a special tool encourages visitors to even more interaction: aboard the ship, everyone is invited to take part in the Science Year campaign #MeineFragefürdieWissenschaft by handing in their own questions for science.
The SFB-TRR 161 participates in the exhibition with the interactive exhibit "Collaboration in Augmented Reality". The exhibit, which was developed in cooperation between projects C01 and Ö, enables users to experience an interaction in Augmented Reality. They learn more about interaction concepts, how they are developed, tested, and optimzed to allow for a successful simulation. A highlight: data from the interaction during the exhibition is collected anonymously and will become part of further studies on interaction in augmented reality. Thus, visitors simultaneously take on the role of explorers and become the subject of research themselves.
In the Science Year 2022 - Participate! the exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft tours through 30 German cities on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Admission is free. The exhibition addresses all interested persons from the age of 12.
The Ship
The MS Wissenschaft is an inland freighter with a length of 100 metres that once transported
coal and containers across European waterways. Since 2002, the exhibition ship tours Germany every
summer as a floating science center within the framework of the Science Years. For its diesel
engines the ship uses GtL, which has a better environmental compatibility than conventional diesel
fuel. A photovoltaic system on deck supplies the entire exhibition with electricity.
The Tour in the Science Year 2022
For its first journey, the ship will head from Berlin to Brandenburg. After that, the MS
Wissenschaft will stop in Saxony-Anhalt, Lower Saxony, Northrhine-Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate,
Saarland and Baden-Württemberg before ending its tour in Frankfurt am Main in the fall. More
information available under
