Andreas Bulling Appointed as Henriette Herz Scout

Andreas Bulling, Professor for Human-Computer Interaction and Cognitive Systems at the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems at the University of Stuttgart (VIS) and leader of SFB-TRR 161 Project A07, has been appointed as Henriette Herz Scout by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. As such, he is eligible to nominate three international young researches who will receive a two-year research grant at the VIS.

Bulling, who already supervised 14 (post)doctoral researchers on their successful path into science and who currently has another 16 doctoral students in his research group, emphasizes the significance of the scouting program. “This is a unique sponsorship to attract young talent to the University of Stuttgart,” says Bulling in the corresponding news article on the University’s website. One big advantage of the fellowship is that it is less bureaucratic than many other funding opportunities on the postdoctoral level: “With the Humboldt Fellowship, it is possible to start research with us within just a few weeks of being nominated.”

In Stuttgart, the new Humboldt Fellows will be integrated into Bulling’s research group. In particular, they will be involved in the field of cognitive modeling. Together with his team, Bulling is currently conducting extensive research to enable intelligent agents to develop a theory of mind. If successful, this would make it possible for the first time to develop assistance systems that can perform actions proactively.
