Thomas Ertl Honored with Prestigious Visualization Career Award

Thomas Ertl, Project Leader and Member of the Steering Committe of the SFB-TRR 161, professor at the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems (VIS), director of the Visualization Research Center (VISUS), and spokesperson of the SimTech Cluster of Excellence, received the 2019 Visualization Career Award of the IEEE Technical Committee on Visualization and Graphics (VGTC).

During the opening session of the IEEE VIS Conference in Vancouver with more than 1000 attendees, he was honored for his seminal research in volume rendering, flow visualization, parallel and hardware accelerated graphics, large datasets, interactive steering, and visual analytics. Furthermore for his leadership in developing and sustaining the visualization research community.

In addition, he was also inducted to the newly founded VIS Academy.

Thomas Ertl has received the Outstanding Technical Contribution Award (2006), and the Distinguished Career Award (2016) from Eurographics, as well as the Technical Achivement Award (2006) from IEEE VGTC. Receiving the Visualization Career Award, Ertl is now the only visualization researcher who was acknowledged for his research contributions and for his academic career on the European as well as on the international level.
