Marc Spicker, Franz Hahn, Thomas Lindenmeyer, Dietmar Saupe, and Oliver Deussen received a Best Paper Award for their Visual Computing paper titled Quantifying Visual Abstraction Quality for Stipple Drawings at Expressive 2017 in California.

In this SFB-TRR 161 paper, the authors tried to model perceived abstraction quality of stipple illustrations, with respect to the number of points used to create them. They performed a paired comparison of different abstractions of stimuli and gathered subjective data in the crowd. Based on their study, they could show that it is possible to predict the perceived quality of stippled representations based on the properties of an input image.

Congrats to the authors of this paper!
